9am – 12 noon (revised timing and extended by one hour)
270 Ferry Rd
Description:
Vanessa and Justin will be presenting a work shop on growing preserving and cooking sub tropical and tropical vegetables including root crops. These are valuable plants which are often perennial and sometimes annual have been passed down from generation to generation amongst traditional cultures for centuries.
Vanessa and Justin are passionate presenters on this topic and can provide information to you on questions about gardening, preserving and using the vast array of plants that are both great to eat and well suited to Queensland’s often harsh conditions.
More often than not these surprisingly easy to grow vegetables are far more nutrient dense and disease resistant than their cooler climate cousins which we all are familiar with growing.
If you struggle during our hot and often summer to produce healthy green and nutritious vegetables; are sick of the ongoing battle with insect attack; and, don’t want to spend hours labouring in the hot sun to produce what seems to be not much food, Justin and Vanessa will entertain and delight you with this presentation on how to grow a range of high-value plants and tips how to cook and/or store them.
Perennial and annual sub tropical gardening can produce astounding results with yields well in excess of traditional temperate typ root crops and leaves.
It is now accepted these traditional plants are the very best system for growing food due to the relatively small energy input requirements needed to grow the crop and the perennial nature of the plants.
Some of the plants we will be talking about are Cassavas, Amaranths, Tree Spinach, Yacon, Daikon, Komatsuna, Yams, Taro and many more of the “super foods” you often hear about but rarely see.
Most of these plants are ideal for green smoothies and provide excellent general health benefits. Justin will demonstrate easy to grasp techniques to ensure you are able to grow your own perennials for years to come adding to local and family food sovereignty and provide much in the way of hope to gardeners who struggle with traditional plantings this time of year. Vanessa will share a host of traditional recipes from her native Brazil and around the world enabling you to make full use of what you are growing.
This workshop is a must for foodies and gardeners alike.
Please book early for this workshop. Due to the popularity of Justin and Vanessa workshops, we are restricting numbers. This way, everyone has a great time and garner a lot of practical knowledge on food groups that we seldom have the opportunity to access.
